CHIMPANZEES IN THE WILD

The common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) is an omnivorous ape found in a variety of wooded habitats across equatorial Africa. Typically, chimpanzees inhabit evergreen forests, but marginal populations have been shown to exist in deciduous woodland and grassland habitats, interspersed with gallery forest. Bossou is one of ten long-term field sites of chimpanzees in Africa.

Taxonomists generally agree that Pan troglodytes can be divided into three subspecies that exhibit mutually exclusive geographical ranges: P. t. verus in western Africa, P. t. troglodytes in central Africa, and P. t. schweinfurthii in eastern Africa.

1, Wild chimpanzees of Bossou, Guinea and surrounding areas (Mt. Nimba and Diecke)

We have been carrying out fieldwork since 1976 on wild chimpanzees at Bossou, Guinea. More recently, we have been conducting research in the classified forest of Diecke, Guinea and the Nimba Mountains both in Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire.
