Feeding ecology of Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus morio)

Report:KANAMORI TOMOKO

Date:2010/06/16 - 2010/07/09

We have continued field research on wild orangutan in a research area which we newly settled around a tourist lodge in Danum Valley Conservation Area, Malaysia. About 6 year has passed since we set up this new research area.
First, I visited Malaysia on 16th June and received my new research pass at Economic Planning Unit of Prime Minister's Department in Kuala Lumpur and applied new research visa at Sabah Immigration Office in Kota Kinabalu.
Then, I visited Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL) in Danum Valley Conservation Area, Sabah. My research term between 25th June and 6th July 2010, I conducted fallen fruits census and nest census mainly. In our site, mast flowering has occurred after an interval of three years this year (2010) though flowering happened to 2005 and 2007. The flower of dipterocarp began to bloom from May, and I was able to confirm to 5 geneses (DIPTEROCARPACEAE Parashorea, Dryobalanops, Shorea, Hopea, Vatica) on July. Dipterocarp will become ripe fruits on August to September, and a lot of fruits will fall to ground. I would like to pay attention how to increases the density of orangutan when fruits productivity become high during August to September.
