Evolutionary Morphology section, which is based in the Department of Evolution and Phylogeny, was founded as one of the first two departments when Primate Research Institute was established in 1967. Our major areas of research are concerned with evolution and adaptation of form and function in the musculo-skeletal systems of primate species including humans. We study them in the context of ecological and behavioral aspects by combining experimental methods and field researches. We are also actively involved in paleontological fieldwork projects in Kenya, Iran, and Thailand, which aim to elucidate evolution of great and lesser apes.
